Who We Are
Clemson University is a selective, public, land-grant university in a college-town setting along a dynamic Southeastern corridor. The University is committed to world-class teaching, research and public-service in the context of general education, student development and continuing education.
The University is located in Clemson, S.C., a town of 12,000 nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and on the shores of Lake Hartwell. Approximately 17,100 students, including 3,126 graduate students, study on the 1,400-acre campus. Students may choose from more than 70 degree programs offered through the University's five colleges: Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences; Architecture, Arts and Humanities; Business and Behavioral Science; Engineering and Science; and Health, Education and Human Development.
History
Clemson was founded in 1889, a legacy of Thomas Green Clemson, who willed his Fort Hill plantation home, its surrounding farmlands, forest and other property to the state of South Carolina to establish a technical and scientific institution.
Service
Clemson University plays a direct role in South Carolina's economic development by providing a well-trained work force, the advanced degrees needed to support knowledge-based industries, and a research base that can spin off new entrepreneurial companies and create jobs. As part of its academic strategic plan, Clemson has identified a dozen core research initiatives in areas that combine faculty strength, opportunities for substantial federal funding and the possibility of economic development. Many of these core initiatives -- in areas such as nanotechnology, genomics, advanced materials and biomedicine -- could be harbingers of future industrial niches for South Carolina.
As a state land-grant university, Clemson reaches out to citizens, communities and businesses all over South Carolina, with a presence in every county through its Cooperative Extension Service, Agriculture and Forestry Research system, and mandated Regulatory and Public Service programs.
