Prysmian Power Cables and Systems LLC in Abbeville, which in 2009 started operating the then-tallest building in South Carolina, plans a $4.5 million expansion that will create 10 jobs. The facility in Abbeville is part of Prysmian’s power and telecommunications cable operations.

The three-story project follows the company’s more than $600,000 investment in new equipment last year. The company last year bought the former Pro Towel site for the expansion and recently committed to invest $7.5 million in its Abbeville facilities over five years, a Prysmian statement said.

In 2009, the $46 million plant in Abbeville opened with a 373-foot tower that was described as the state’s tallest building. Steve Bowles, development services director for Abbeville County, said a project in South Carolina’s Lowcountry could potentially be taller.

Prysmian’s North American high-voltage customers include public utilities, utility contractors and private development groups.
