June 30, 2023Greenville, Spartanburg & the Upstate Receive Mac Conway Award
Site Selection Magazine has named Upstate SC Alliance, Greenville Area Development Corporation and OneSpartanburg, Inc. joint recipients of a 2023 Mac Conway Award. This prestigious award recognizes the efforts of economic development agencies that “worked tirelessly to bring projects large and small to their communities.”
Scores are awarded based on six criteria: total projects, total investment and total jobs associated with those corporate facility projects in 2022, and per capita calculations of those same three metrics. Additional communities recognized include Greater Phoenix Economic Council and REDI Cincinnati.
The report called out a number of significant projects in the region:
- BMW: $1.7 billion manufacturing expansion creates 300 jobs & $200 million press shop creates 200 jobs in Spartanburg
- Bosch: $200 million investment creates 350 new jobs in Anderson
- Flexon Industries: 200,000-square-foot plant expansion creates 120 jobs in Anderson
- Fuyao Glass America: $34.5 million investment creates 121 new jobs in Greenville

In 2022, the Upstate saw a high volume of new business interest, resulting in 68 projects, $3.9B in capital investment and 6,476 new jobs. The majority of these new projects came from engineered materials, automotive and transport, and industrial manufacturing — with aerospace and life sciences sectors also showing a significant amount of growth.
“Greenville and Spartanburg are both names that resonate in the industrial landscape, and the entire Upstate region benefits when either one is able to attract new investment,” Upstate SC Alliance President & CEO John Lummus says in the article. “It brings more business potential to the region’s 2,100 manufacturers, it deepens the pool of training that our technical colleges can provide, and it ultimately creates more opportunities for economic mobility. Any announcement within the region is a win across the region.”
